Throw any of the items that you see in the picture onto a flower pot, the exceptions are: wheat, beetroots, melons and pumpkins. In those cases throw their corresponding seed item. Then place a hopper below it to start generating resources. No resources will be generated if you haven't placed a hopper so you can also use it as a decoration. All plants except the sapling drop themselves every 30 seconds so an red mushroom for example drops red mushrooms. The exception is the saplings that instead drop logs, sticks and leaves. Jungle trees have the added bonus of also dropping vines and cocoa beans. Oak and dark oak trees also drop apples.
To remove a plant simply break the flower pot.
