Description
Forgero
This mod is in early ALPHA it is full of bugs and missing core features. This mods is only released to test some early features.
This mod is inspired by Tinker’s construct and Smithee.
Warning: This mod is using FRAPI(Fabric rendering API) and is not compatible with Sodium, unless paired with Indium.
Features
This mod allows you to customise and construct custom tools! Tools are made up of tool parts which has to be crafted and improved individually. Combining tool part will allows you to create custom tools with lots of bonuses. Forgero supports most materials found in the vanilla game, and allows you to upgrade tool parts with a secondary material as well. In addition to this, you can craft and embed gems into your tool parts, which can give additional bonuses and unique looks! Tools are created by combining handles and tool part heads. You can also craft a tool with a binding, but that is optional.

This is an example tool crafted by combining a spruce handle which is upgraded with a diamond gem, a diamond binding, and a netherite pickaxe which is upgraded with diamond and a redstone gem.
Currently supported tools:
- Pickaxe
- Shovel
- Axe
More tools are being added soon, but I am prioritizing fixing core features of the mod before adding any more tools. Making core changes to the project is a lot easier if I don’t have to support a lot of tools.
Tool parts

You need to combine tool part to create tools. The tool part head and handle are requirements, and a binding can be added to improve durability. The tool part head will decide which tool will be crafted when combined with a handle.
Available tool parts:
- Pickaxe head
- Shovel head
- Axe head
- handle
- Binding
Materials
There are two types of materials: primary and secondary. Primary materials are used to create the base of your tool parts and will give the tool part some core stats. Different tool parts will benefit from different attributes of a material. Primary materials are used to calculate the core attributes of a tool like damage, mining speed, mining level and attack speed. Secondary materials give unique looks and some additional bonuses to tool part. Secondary materials increase the properties of tool parts, and can increase the mining level. Materials are designed to model the properties of vanilla materials, but I am looking into optimising properties if it
Available materials:
- Spruce
- Birch
- Oak
- Stone
- Iron
- Diamond
- Netherite
Additional secondary materials:
- Leather
- Glowstone
Due to the automatic generation of resources related to each material, adding materials is extremely easy, even from other mods. The textures of tool parts are generated from palettes which are listed alongside the properties of materials. If there exists a reference image which contains all colours of a materials, Forgero can extract a palette from these images and create new dynamic textures. I am not going to add any more materials until the API has had some time to mature. I expect the material system to undergo a lot of changes.
Gems

Gems are unique upgrades which can be applied to tool parts. Each tool part can hold a gem, which makes it possible for a tool to have three gems applied in total. Gems provide unique attribute bonuses to tool parts which improves the tool. Not all gems can be applied to all tool parts. Tool part heads can apply mining speed, attack speed and durability gems. Handles can apply mining speed and durability gems, which binding can only have durability gems. The total effect of the gem is decided by multiplying its base stat with the gems level. Combining two gems of the same level will produce a gem of higher level
Availible gems:
- Diamond gem(Durability)
- Emerald gem(Durability)
- Ender gem(Mining speed)
- Lapis gem(Mining speed)
- Redstone gem(Attack damage)
I am planning on adding more gems, especially special gems dropped from mobs and enemies, but the Gem system needs more refinement before this is possible.
Getting started
Patterns
To get started creating your first tool, you first need to create a pattern for each tool part you want to create.
Tool head patterns can be created by combining a desired tool and a piece of paper, both vanilla and Forgero tools will work.

A handle pattern can be crafted by combining a stick and a piece of paper

A binding pattern can be created by combining a binding and a piece of paper. Bindings are currently not available in vanilla, so you need to get them through creative means. Bindings will spawn in chests in a future update.
Tool parts
Creating tool parts is done by combining the corresponding pattern and primary materials. The pattern is not really important. All heads and handles requires three pieces of primary material, while the binding requires four pieces of material.

Upgrading tool parts
Tool parts can be upgraded with gems and secondary materials. This is done with the smithing table.

Crafting tools
By combining tool parts in the crafting table, you can craft tools.

Gems
Crafting gems requires an amethyst shard and the desired gem. Gems are currently combined in the smithing table to increase their level, but this will change to the anvil and will require levels in an upcoming update.

Status
This mod is a huge Work in Progress, and I have a lot of plans for how it will improve and evolve. Development is very slow and I am currently working on making the tool system flexible, so I can add more features and additions to the mod without having to rewrite large portions of code.
Planned or WIP features:
- Support unique material properties, like piglins not attacking you if are wearing gold and glowstone emitting light
- Add the rest of the vanilla tools
- Add custom tools like excavator and hammer
- Add new weapons like spears and broadswords
- Add new visual upgrades to tools parts by enabling you to discover new skins for your tool parts(Vanilla friendly of course)
- Make the mod easy to integrate with, so other mods can add their own materials effortlessly
- Add new and rare materials which can only be gathered by defeating bosses and by exploring
- Add unique attributes to materials depending on which tool part it is being used on
- Add new workbenches which makes it easier to craft and manage tools
- Create a new system for creating tool descriptions and overhauling its looks
- Adding support for the Forge Modloader
I am also planning to add support for crafting bows and armour, but I haven’t started development on these features yet.

Licence
Forgero and all its assets are licensed under MIT which means you can do pretty much whatever you want with the source code and its assets. You probably don’t need to ask me for permission!
Support
As this is experimental software, I provide no support for this mod. The mod is in active development. Contributions and suggestions are welcome!
Known issues:
Issues are tracked mainly tracked on Github. If you are experiencing issues, check there first.
- Emerald gem placed on a handle with a secondary material is currently bugged.
- Texture for Gem and secondary material for axe bindings are not correct
- Crafting tool parts with a pattern can duplicate materials if there is a remainder
- Gem are being removed from tool parts when they are upgraded with a secondary material
- There is some z-fighting on a lot of the models
- Glint is only applied to one side of enchanted tools
- If you are using an older version of the Fabric API, the tool might blink a lot when enchanted (Update Fabric API to fix this)
