Thirst is a simple mod that adds a thirst mechanic to the game, but that fits in modpacks for the newer versions of Minecraft by adding original features and compatibility with the most popular mods.
This mod is heavily inspired by the other thirst/survival mods out there, including Dehydration, Tough as Nails and Cold Sweat.
Special thanks to Cold Sweat and Create in particular cause their source codes were crucial for me to actually program this.

Features

Thirst and Quenched

Players will have to drink water-based liquids or foods to stay hydrated, and if they don’t they will start to take damage. Your hydration depletes when you move or mine blocks, at a slightly faster rate than hunger. There is also a saturation-like system, where different foods and drinks quench your thirst more than others. As long as you are quenched, your hydration won’t decrease.

Climate and Cold Sweat

The hydration depletion speed is biome-dependent, meaning you will get thirsty more easily in hot or dry biomes, and less so in cold or wet ones. Hydration is more relevant than temperature, so building your base in wet biomes is more advisable than doing so in cold ones.
This system is also compatible with Cold Sweat, and will use their more precise temperature calculations if the mod is present in the pack.

Apple Skin

The mod is compatible with apple skin, showing the “quenched” overlay if the mod is present, as well as tooltips for every item that quenches your thirst.

Farmer’s Delight & Co.

Every food item that should quench your thirst added by farmer’s delight, respite and brewin and chewin is integrated by default, making teas (or booze) the best late-game hydration source

(yup, this also includes Create‘s Builder’s Tea)

Water Purity

If you’re using water, the source you’re harvesting it from is relevant.
Water purity comes in 4 stages:

The water from mountains and caves is purer than that of plains or oceans, and in general running water is purer than source blocks (you can fill bottles with non-source water blocks in this mod).
The stacksize for water bottles has been increased to 16, to make them fit with the foods from Farmer’s Delight.
Water can be purified on a campfire or a furnace: a campfire will purify it by 1 unit, and a furnace by 2 (meaning it will go from Dirty to Acceptable, for instance).

Purity Integration

Water purity also matters when using a Kettle or a Keg. In the case of a Kettle, the water in the Tea will have +1 purity value from where it started. In a Keg instead, because of fermentation, the purity will lower by 2 if the water used isn’t purified (if the water is purified, the purity level won’t decrease).

Terracotta Bowls

In the early game, players can craft bowls made out of clay and fire them on a campfire to turn them into terracotta bowls, which can both carry water and withstand the heat needed for said water to be purified.

Configuration Options

The config allows you to tweak a lot of the mod’s settings, including:
  • Y levels for mountains and caves, for purity checks
  • How purer is flowing water than still water
  • Whether the player is able to use their hand to drink
  • How harsh is the temp. system
  • Probabilities for purity-related effects (poison and such)
  • How much do furnaces and campfires purify water
  • How harsh is the fermentation-derived purity decrease in Brewin’ and Chewin’
This mod is still very early in development, which means it’s filled to the brim with bugs and glitches. Sorry
Coming soon:
  • Integration with Create
  • 1.19 version
