Description
(A Data Pack for Minecraft 1.16.2 – 1.16.5.)
Highlights:
– Better fishing, as you can catch live fish, and might even snag a drowned
– Greatly expanded fishing junk and treasure loot tables
– A new tab just for fishing-related advancements
This data pack attempts to improve fishing in a variety of ways.
First, and least consequentially, fish have temperature preferences. You'll no longer be able to obtain salmon in warmer biomes, and neither will you find pufferfish or tropical fish in cold or frozen biomes. Cod are found primarily in more temperate waters.
Second, while most fish will conveniently land in your inventory when caught, as happens in vanilla fishing, sometimes one will instead come off the hook and end up swimming (or flopping around on the ground) at your feet. And it won't always be fish that you hook in that way. If you're fishing in shallow waters, you might occasionally snag a turtle. And if you're fishing in an ocean — which you need to be, if you want to find treasure — you might sometimes reel in a squid or even an angry drowned!
And note that it's worth your while to deal directly with those live catches when they arrive, rather than just letting them flop around until they die naturally. They have a chance of dropping junk or treasure items if you kill them! (This applies only to live catches from fishing, though. Regular spawned fish will still only drop their vanilla loot when killed.)
Third, the junk and treasure loot tables have been greatly expanded. After all, all sorts of things get dumped in the ocean, by accident or design. Who knows what you might manage to pull out again?
New junk items you can obtain from fishing include grass and seagrass, feathers, arrows, bone meal, iron or gold nuggets, clay balls, paper, and the like, as well as low-level "useful" items like additional leather armor pieces (though you'll still find a disproportionate number of boots), clocks, compasses, and buckets. Bamboo can now be obtained by fishing in any biome, though not as commonly, and only in oceans. (Similarly, lily pads are now only obtainable if you're fishing in smaller bodies of water.)
New treasure items include enchanted armor pieces and weapons, iron and gold ingots, emeralds and diamonds, treasure maps, and even potions. But note that treasure items can now be found only if you're fishing in an actual ocean or river biome. You can't snag treasure from a lake, even if it's large.
A complete breakdown of exactly what's in the pack's loot tables can be found in the "loot tables.txt" file in the data pack's main folder.
Please note that "Catch of the Day" does not alter the odds of finding junk or treasure items. It simply increases the variety of items that you can find, when you do find them.
This data pack also adds a new tab of advancements specifically themed to fishing.
"Catch of the Day" should be compatible with any "AFK fishing" mods. But be aware that this data pack will make AFK fishing riskier. Obviously, there's the chance of being damaged by a live-caught pufferfish or outright attacked by a drowned. But even passive live fish you catch can move you around while they're flopping at your feet, and maybe end up pushing you somewhere you don't want to be. Also, since there is so much more variety now in what you can catch, you'll likely find your inventory filling up faster.
CREDITS: The option to catch live fish was inspired by Tetrajak's "Feisty Fishing" data pack. Some of the new advancements are based upon advancements from "Expanded Advancement and Recipe Pack" by PancakeIdentity and/or "BlazeandCave's Advancements Pack" by Calvinator1.
