THIS MOD WILL NOT BE DEVELOPED FURTHER:

The plants from it have been redeveloped for inclusion in the Prehistoric Flora mod, in a much more satisfying "Mineraft"-ish way with better models, more stable code and just generaly far better. You can continue to use this mod, but be aware it is badly done and contains a few bugs (which aren't dangerous but which may cause glitches and annoyances) which won't be fixed.

I strongly recommend you don't use it though: it stays here for interest and archive only, and because I have not yet updated the other mod to a version beyond 1.12.2.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

A mod containing some new plants to use, some extinct, some extant but very similar to prehistoric forms, with high-quality graphics, not much like Minecraft vanilla. Where possible, the plants are dynamic and variable.

Textures are mainly 64px, with some 128px (noted below). See the images in the "Images" tab above for what these look like in their full 64px/128px incarnations. There is a currently a texturepack for imposition of some 16px textures if you want to use it. I think it looks pretty rough with it applied.

The mod has a config file for you to adjust the wild-spawns. Wild-spawns occur as plants in their youngest stage of growth, not fully-grown plants, and are not terribly abundant by default – increase the weights in the config if you want more. All versions of the mod will work with modded biomes.

If you are using JEI, in MC 1.12 apply this blacklist in your item Blacklist in the JEI config folder, so you are not cluttered:

If you are using JEI in MC 1.14 or 1.15 use this zenscript (put in a text editor and save as a .zs file into your installation "scripts" folder) to hide the items in conjunction with JEITweaker:

Spore-bearing plants:

Spore-bearing plants can only be propagated by collecting and planting their spores. The config file will allow you to toggle them to either drop spores naturally or require you to collect them by right-clicking a shoot (v.7+ sets them to NOT drop automatically by default). Spores are only available during sporing stages of growth. Manually collecting spores may result in no spores being found, but will always revert the plant to an earlier stage of growth for a while. Bonemeal has no effect on these plants. Planting spores on the right blocks but in the wrong places may result in a young plant forming, but which then dies. Trying to place spores on wrong blocks just results in the spores dropping as items. Spores can be crafted into decorative (vanilla-style 16px) spore blocks, which are slippery and affected by gravity.

Giant Horsetail: The horsetail family has existed since the Devonian period until the present, with plants very like this giant horsetail as well as huge tree types diversifying during the Carboniferous period. Grows randomly up to 12 blocks high in a single column; some stop shorter than full height spontaneously. Once they have grown as much as they want to, they will randomly issue sporing stems from around them if there is space, which also grow randomly a few blocks tall. These sporing stems will eventually vanish, to get replaced with new ones in due course. Giant horsetails grow on grass and soil type blocks. They are found in biomes of type: SWAMP, RIVER, JUNGLE by default, but can be planted in any biome..

Dicksonia Tree Fern: Tree ferns of one kind or another have been around since at least the Carboniferous period, and Dicksonia is amongst the most ancient lineages. Grows randomly up to 14 blocks high in a single column, expanding to 3×3 at the top. They will grow as much as they are able within the space provided; some stop shorter than full height spontaneously. Broken stumps left in the ground will eventually re-shoot. A non-juvenile plant with leaves will be able to shed spores at any time. They grow on grass and soil type blocks. They are found in biomes of type: SWAMP, FOREST, CONIFEROUS (but never in a SNOWY biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome.

Lepidodendron: An extinct giant clubmoss-type family of plants from the Carboniferous to Triassic periods, with similar ancestors a bit before that. This mod creatively interprets two types:

Scaly Lepidodendron: An interpretation of a less evolved form of the group, perhaps even similar to to plants found in the Devonian. Grows randomly up to 16 blocks high in a single column, expanding to 3×3 at the top. They will grow as much as they are able within the space provided; some stop shorter than full height spontaneously. Broken stumps left in the ground will eventually re-shoot. They alternate between spore-producing stages (orange spore-bearing heads) and non-sporing stages. They grow on grass and soil type blocks. They are found in biomes of type: SWAMP, RIVER (but never in a SNOWY biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome.

Woody Lepidodendron: A more evolved form of Lepidodendron, more characteristic of the Carboniferous and even Triassic examples. Grows very quickly and randomly up to 21 blocks high in a single column, expanding to 3×3 at the top. They will grow as much as they are able within the space provided; some stop shorter than full height spontaneously. Broken stumps left in the ground will eventually re-shoot. A non-juvenile plant with leaves will be able to shed spores at any time. They grow on grass and soil type blocks. They are found in biomes of type: SWAMP, RIVER, CONIFEROUS (but never in a SNOWY biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome.

Prototaxites: An extinct, enigmatic organism, thought to be a a kind of primitive giant fungus, from the Silurian to Devonian periods. It begins its life as a mat of mycelium, which can be broken but not collected. The mycelium needs to be within 3 blocks of water and on gravel, dirt or sand. The mycelium will spread slowly to surrounding blocks if conditions are right. Once it has attained enough density it will send up the fruiting bodies, which will then slowly grow taller until they produce sporangia at the top. Smaller patches of mycelium might also send up fruiting bodies, but these will never grow so tall. Breaking the fruiting bodies will not drop anything. Once the fruiting bodies have sporangia they will periodically shed spores, which can be collected and planted on an appropriate block. Eventually the fruiting body will collapse back down to the mycelium again. Can be found as a very rare spawn anywhere that sand exists. [Much improved natural generation coming soon]

Cooksonia: An extinct proto-plant from the Silurian and Devonian periods. They need to be within 3 blocks of water in a straight line (or 1 diagonally) and on dirt or grass. The plant will spread slowly to surrounding blocks if conditions are right. Periodically it will develop into a spore-bearing phase for a while, and then eventually die back to a non-spore-bearing stage again. Can be found as a somewhat rare spawn in biomes of type SWAMP, LUSH (but never in a SNOWY biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome. This simple plant has a 128px texture. [Much improved natural generation coming soon]

Psilophyton: An extinct proto-plant from the Devonian period; one of the most sophisticated of the early plants. They need to be within 4 blocks of water in a straight line (or 2 diagonally) and on gravel, dirt or sand, but will not grow right next to water. The plant will spread slowly to surrounding blocks if conditions are right. Periodically it will develop into a spore-bearing phase for a while, and then eventually die back to a non-spore-bearing stage again. Can be found in biomes of type RIVER, WET, LUSH, PLAINS (but never in a SNOWY biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome. It will spawn moderately frequently near water but not all locations will suit it for actually growing: a wild-spawned plant will "resprout" sideways a block if it is more suitable to grow on nextdoor (spore-cultivated plants cannot do this), but they mostly die before sporing due to not being in suitable places. This simple plant has a 128px texture.

Wattieza: An extinct tree from the Devonian period, and the earliest tree-like organism to have been discovered. It was related to horsetails and ferns, but is not in either of those groups. Grows randomly up to 13 blocks high in a single column, expanding to 5×5 at the top. They will grow as much as they are able within the space provided; some stop shorter than full height spontaneously. Broken stumps left in the ground will eventually re-shoot. A non-juvenile plant with leaves will be able to shed spores at any time. They grow on grass and soil type blocks. They are found in biomes of type: JUNGLE, SWAMP, FOREST, WET (but never in a SNOWY biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome.

Cycads and related plants:

Comprises prehistoric bennettitales/cycadeoids as well as modern cycads, spanning time from the Permian or Triassic periods up until the present. They grow slowly and rarely produce flowering cones. Right-clicking on the flowering cones will give you a number of seeds, each of which can be sown to generate a new plant. You cannot generate saplings except via seeds. Plants only grow if there is space to do so, but they will out-compete and destroy neighbouring replaceable plants when they try to grow. Each plant may well never attain full height, and can even remain as a ground-rosette. Headless standing trunks will eventually re-shoot to produce a new crown of leaves, if there is space. All cycads, with the exception of Cycas, require clear sight of the sky to grow from a sapling.

Williamsonia: An extinct bennettitale from the Cretaceous period, which grows up to 5 blocks tall, expanding to 3×3 at the top. Williamsonia grow on grass and soil type blocks. Can be found in biomes of type PLAINS, BEACH and SAVANNA (but never in a SNOWY, FOREST, CONIFEROUS, DENSE or JUNGLE biome) by default, but can be planted in any biome.

Encephalartos horridus: A small modern cycad from arid areas of southern Africa. It has very spiky leaves, which deal damage. It grows in stages but remains one block in size during all stages, and does not form a real trunk. It will grow on soil, grass and sand blocks, and can be found in biomes of type SAVANNA and SANDY (but never in a COLD, SWAMP, WET, SNOWY, FOREST, CONIFEROUS, DENSE or JUNGLE biome), but it can be planted in any biome. It has a 128px texture.

Blue Encephalartos: A modern cycad from southern Africa. There are several blue-leaved Encephalartos, all closely related and looking very similar so I am not specifying the species of this one. Growth is similar to Williamsonia, although is slightly less tall and slightly bushier. Grows on grass, dirt and sand blocks, and occurs in biomes of type HILLS and SAVANNA (but never in a COLD, SWAMP, WET, SNOWY, FOREST, CONIFEROUS, DENSE or JUNGLE biome), but can be planted in any biome.

Bjuvia: A prehistoric cycad genus, from the Permian to Jurassic periods. They represents a quite archaic form of cycad, before leaves and tissues had adapted to cope in drier environments. There two types in this mod. Both grow on soil or grass blocks and can be found in biomes of type WET, RIVER, SWAMP and LUSH (but never in a DRY biome), but they can be planted in any biome:
– Slender Bjuvia: Grows in a single column up to 4 blocks tall.
Broad-Leaved Bjuvia: Grows to 8 blocks tall, expanding to 3×3 at the top..

Cycas: Based on the modern Cycas revoluta. Grows up to 6 blocks tall on dirt or grass, similarly to the Williamsonia. Naturally occurs in biomes of type FOREST, but can be planted in any biome.

Dioon: A modern cycad commonly growing as a 2-block high 3×3 bush on dirt or grass. Sometimes it will form a one-block high trunk. Naturally occurs in biomes of type FOREST and PLAINS, but can be planted in any biome.

The mod was assembled – initially – with help from MCreator, with so many manual code edits to the extent that MCreator is little more than a java compiler.
